In honour of National Name Your Car Day (2nd October) we asked our team if they name their cars. 35% of our team admit to naming their cars, whereas the other 65% think it’s pretty weird! But which camp do you fall in?
There’s actually some psychology behind this. According to experts, we tend to name things we form emotional attachments to, so much like children naming a soft toy, adults sometimes extend that same feeling of familiarity to their cars, and to bring a little more joy into the daily commute.
When it comes to choosing a name, people can get pretty creative. Some go for classic alliterations like Pam Polo or Alfie Alfa, while others opt for something more comedic, like Harrison (Ford), or Donald Trunk. Celebrities even get in on the fun – Jay Leno famously named his car collection, and Queen Elizabeth II’s old Range Rover was called “The Duchess”.
If you're wondering whether you should join the 35% who name their cars, the answer really comes down to one thing: Does it make you smile? Naming your car can add a little joy to your daily drive, give you a chance to flex your creativity, and make your vehicle feel more like "yours." It's also a fun conversation starter – you'd be surprised how many people secretly love giving their cars a persona.
But if naming your car isn't your thing, don’t worry – the 65% of us who don’t give our cars names aren’t missing out on anything essential. A car, after all, is still just a car… right?
So, whether you’re driving around in "Kara Kodiaq" or you’re keeping things formal with just “the Audi,” we hope you enjoy the journey this National Name Your Car Day. And who knows, maybe you’ll be inspired to give your car a name before the week is out!
